Patients’ overall experience with their family doctor

Patients’ rating of their experience with their family doctor (from best doctor possible [10] to worst doctor possible [0]). (see data dictionary)

What do you think?

  • What might influence patients’ overall rating of their doctor?
  • How do your experiences with your family doctor compare to those reported by other Albertans?

Understanding “overall rating of doctor”

In email surveys conducted between October 2018 and March 2023, the HQCA asked patients who recently visited their doctor:

  • Using any number from 0 to 10, where 0 is the worst doctor possible and 10 is the best doctor possible, what number would you use to rate your doctor?

Patients could choose a number from 0 to 10.

Considerations when viewing the results

A patient’s overall rating of a doctor is one of the best ways to understand a summary of the patient’s experience related to multiple aspects of care. Reviewing the results of this survey question in combination with the other questions helps to provide insights into what is shaping patients’ overall experience with care from their family doctor.

  • How does the overall rating of the doctor compare to the other survey results?
  • To help understand overall rating of doctor, consider looking at other patient experience survey results for context. What factors may be influencing how patients rate their doctor?
